The Thai government has promised to restructure the economy from the agricultural sector and old industries to new target industries in order to raise the economic status of the country and the quality of life of the people under the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Development Project, an area-based development project focused on developing in eastern seaboard industrial zones. However, the implementation of this development project over the years has reflected some of the results that are beyond the state's promises to its citizens, particularly to the local farmers situated in the ECC backyard, the agricultural areas on the edge of the industrial development zone in the EEC project. These farmers are faced with shifting agricultural land use to industrial production and real estate speculation, distributing waste factories and illegally dumping industrial waste, and competing for water resources within the region. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to reflect on the consequences of the government's promises under the EEC project by considering the collective experiences of local farmers in the EEC backyard that have influenced their hopes and fears for the future development scenario.
